TL DR AL just got a lot less fun, and ditching AL made my table a lot more fun. I don't get to add anything to any of my characters, but that's fine because I'm not going to be playing AL this season anyway. That's it, I get no actual rewards at all. And with ten tables, that means coming up with a week-by-week schedule and making sure that all the tables stick to it. So to keep things fair, you need to make sure everyone is on the same page. Generally when you're playing at a store you never know who's going to be sitting at which table. My table at the FLGS is about six sessions into the intro mod to HotDQ. I had the opposite experience on the first night of Season 8: We just didn't do it. No gold, no treasure, and no factions make adventuring the worst life choice. Before, my character had the promise of loot, or faction missions as motivation. Maybe if I was playing in a hardcover with a continuous story, it would be different, but with the one shot design AL has, it makes no sense to go on adventures. I'm most disappointed by the lack of a player reward for bounty Hunter, and limiting other rewards like Deja Vu to only season 8 content.Īs a player, my characters don't have motivation to complete adventures. Only thing I like is that ACP/TP rewards go at the same pace as players. It was also confusing to have a section for gold on the logsheet, but be rewarded gold at the end.ĭM rewards are lackluster, and I don't see much to encourage me to keep DMing. The advancement checkpoint /treasure point system was pretty confusing for a lot of them. I had to change things around to provide them with a motivation and reason to risk their lives.

I had to do a lot of extra work prepping, because the mods I was running use payment or treasure as an incentive for the party to actually do the thing. It's extremely immersion breaking to not get to keep loot, bot as a DM and as a Player. Martial classes that shine in combat have nothing to do, because why on Earth would the party risk their lives if they don't get to keep any loot? I like RP, but it really gives some classes the short straw. It's close enough to milestone leveling to not be immersion breaking.

I wish there was an easier way to convert existing characters, but it's okay for new characters.
